According to media hype and a bogus interpretation of the Mayan calendar, the world is supposed to end on Friday. But some people are actually freaked out about it. You know who's not? ACTUAL MAYANS.--There are still about 800,000 Mayans living in the Yucatan region of Mexico. And none of them think their calendar says the world is about to end.
--As one 62-year-old Mayan told reporters, quote, "Remember 2006, and the 6-6-6 date? A lot of people thought that something was going to happen, and nothing happened. Why get panicky?"--You know what they ARE worried about? A massive number of TOURISTS heading to their sacred sites this week.
--A tourism official in the area says, quote, "I'm worried there are going to be more people than [hotel] rooms. The people who are coming are basically spiritual, and that could be a problem as well.
--"Because those people like to form circles to receive energy, and there is no way to reserve space for that kind of thing at the ruin sites."
